Holiday Checklist

Holiday checklist for your pet

As more and more people are taking their pets abroad on holiday with them (following changes made to the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) in January 2012) we have put together a PETS Passport check list to ensure you are fully aware of the requirements.

Below we have listed a useful check list for you to tick off in preparation for your holiday:

  • Ensure your pet’s annual vaccinations are up-to-dateHoliday checklist for your pet
  • Microchip fitted, collar and identity tags – make sure if you have moved address that your contact details for the microchip have been changed.  Ensure your mobile number is on the pet tag
  • Rabies vaccine administered
  • Parasite control – flea, tick and worm control.  Hillside can advise you on the best form of on-going control for your individual pet.  Prevention is better than cure
  • Official PETS Health Certificate for European travel issued
  • Any specific certification required by countries you are visiting or passing through
  • Pet Insurance is up-to-date – it’s also advisable to take their contact details and your policy number with you in case of an emergency

Travelling overseas with your pet on the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

From time to time regulations do change, so it’s always a good idea to visit the DEFRA website www.gov.uk/defra or call the Pet Travel Helpline on
0370 2411710 well in advance for the latest information about travelling abroad with your pet.

If your pet does not have a passport, you should look to initiate the process at last eight months prior to your travel dates.  Please get in touch with us at Hillside and we will be able to advise you on this process.  See also our information on The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

If your pet does have a current passport, where possible please contact the surgery a month before your trip to Europe so that we can tailor an individual preventative treatment plan for your pet, check your documentation and discuss any queries you may have before you go.

It just remains for us to say ‘Happy holidays!’
